Mozambique’s Minister of Health Armindo Tiago revealed in Maputo this Wednesday that the coverage rate of essential health services in Mozambique is below the needs of the population, while considering the government’s efforts towards achieving universal health coverage in the country satisfactory.

“The rate of coverage in essential services in our country is 47%, while the percentage of Mozambican families that dedicate more than 10% of their income to health is 1.6%,” Tiago said at the opening ceremony of the high-level dialogue on health sector financing.

The health minister noted that, although these figures demonstrate that Mozambique outperforms other countries in the region, “it is recognized that it is below the global average”.

The minister listed some challenges that still prevail in the health sector, where resolution involves particularly high costs, namely in chronic cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

Wednesday’s meeting was attended by other representatives from the ministries of Health and of Economy and Finance, the Assembly of the Republic, the private sector, civil society and cooperation partners.
