Five Food Packaging Companies Jointly Receive $12.7 Million From the Federal Government to Improve Operations.

Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) announced an investment to help five innovative businesses within the southern Ontario food processing and packaging industry with the support they need to enhance production capabilities, strengthen women-owned and led businesses, increase revenues, and create over 180 skilled jobs.

Consequently, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the FedDev Ontario, confirmed the $12.7 million funding, being made through the Jobs and Growth Fund and the Business Scale-up and Productivity stream, included sums for five companies operating in the food processing and packaging sector: Ferrero Canada Ltd, Tempo Flexible Packaging Inc, Sheen Legend Packaging Corp (operating as Beneco Packaging and SoOPAK), Summer Fresh Salads Inc. and Casa Bonita Foods Inc..

Among the five companies, Ferrero Canada Ltd. a leading manufacturer of chocolate and confectionery will receive a $5-million investment. This investment will increase capacity and further automate two main production lines to meet the rise in consumer demand. As a result, Ferrero will be able to move to 24/7 automation and adopt industry 4.0 technologies to enhance its made-in-Canada production by 30 percent. This project will also create more than 100 skilled jobs in Brantford.

The increasing demand for fresh and high-quality food products is anticipated to expand the food packaging technology & equipment industry demand during the projection period. Moreover, the increased demand for ready-to-eat food products and the growing integration of automation technologies & flexibility of machinery are also helping to propel market growth.

The food and beverage processing sector in Ontario is a key contributor to Canada’s growing economy, accounting for 37 percent of the industry’s revenue in the country. The sector has more than 4,000 establishments in the province, employing more than 125,000 people. The Government of Canada is committed to creating jobs by investing in businesses that contribute to successful industries, like the food processing and packaging sector, in order to ensure an economy that works for everyone.
