Ottawa ranked top Canadian city for work-life balance

According to a new report, Ottawa ranks among the top 10 cities in the world when it comes to work-life balance.
Prepared by office security firm Kisi, the 2022 Work-Life Balance Index looks at 51 U.S. cities and 49 cities from the rest of the world.

According to Kisi, the study aims to show which cities provide the healthiest work-life balance for their citizens, as opposed to being a livability index or a ranking of the best global cities to work in.

The report takes into account over 130 data points pertaining to work intensity, society and city livability. For example, those measured include the percentage of remote jobs, average number of vacation days, access to health care and mental health care, inclusivity and tolerance, city safety, air quality, housing affordability and the city's cultural and leisure offerings.

The top 5 cities ranked for work-life balance is Oslo (Norway) that scored 100 out of 100, followed by Bern (Switzerland) with 99.46, Helsinki (Finland) with 99.24, Zurich (Switzerland) with 96.33 and Copenhagen (Denmark) with 96.21.

Ottawa is the highest-ranked Canadian city on the list, placing seventh with a score of 95.51 out of 100.

Vancouver is the second-highest ranked Canadian city on the list, placing 16th and scoring 92.23.

Toronto comes in as third-highest ranked Canadian city on the list, placing 19th ranked city for work-life balance, with a score of 91.12.

Among the 4 Canadian cities on the list, Calgary had the lowest score. The city ranks 30th on the list of cities and received a score of 89.38.

The report also revealed the cities found to have the highest percentage of overworked peopled. According to the ranking, the top 5 ranked as most overworked cities include Dubai (The United Arab Emirates) that scored 61.23 overall work-life balance, followed by Hong Kong with 77.11, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) comes in third with an overall score of 66.02, followed by Singapore at 85.66 and Montevideo (Uruguay) in fifth at 74.53.

The list defines "overworked" as a full-time employee working for more than 48 hours per working week. More than 16 per cent of people in these cities are defined as overworked, compared to just 10 per cent in the Canadian cities.
