The inflation reported by Poland's Central Statistical Office (GUS) in January amounted to 17.2 percent, while the so-called consumer inflation amounted to 19.2 percent, reported Rzeczpospolita on Thursday.

"It is consumers who feel the higher increase in prices, especially of food and chemical products," the media said, citing NielsenIQ data prepared especially for Rzeczpospolita.

"It is higher by 0.3 percentage points compared to December, 2022, and has almost returned to the level we observed in November 2022," said Małgorzata Cichecka, director of NielsenIQ data analytics in an interview.

According to data published by the daily, "for the grocery basket, inflation measured in this way is 19.1 percent against 19 percent in December 2022." As the newspaper pointed out, the biggest jump can be seen in chemistry - from 18.4 to 20 percent. "The highest rates are recorded for hyper- and supermarkets, where price changes amounted to: 22.2 percent and 21.8 percent, respectively. Consumers bought fewer items of products there than in the previous year",  added Cichecka.

The prices of food products are still going crazy, only in January the prices of vegetables increased by 23.1 percent year-on-year, mayonnaise by 37 percent and eggs by 41 percent. Chemical products are even more expensive --washing powders by up to 40 percent, toilet paper by 47.1 percent, and paper towels by almost 60 percent," according to the results from a study by UCE Research and WSB Universities published by the daily that day.

Poland, along with other European countries, is suffering from high inflation. The start of 2023 saw a renewed rise in inflation, following its decline in the last two months of 2022. Its scale, however, turned out to be lower than market expectations.
