Andy Jassy succeeded Jeff Bezos as the next CEO of Amazon in July 2021. Andy Jassy seemed well setup for the role of Amazon CEO. Here are the reasons that there was little concern when the decision was made for Jassy to become the next CEO: Jassy was very close with Jeff Bezos, he was known as an Amazon lifer, and he was well-known in the industry for creating Amazon Web Services. Amazon Web services helps with cloud computing and has become a major business in the world. After Jassy took over as CEO, Amazon’s business has gone down. 2022 was its slowest year of growth and Jassy has had to make decisions to cut costs. Amazon is cutting 9,000 jobs in addition to the 18,000 layoffs that were announced in January. Jassy has also cut costs on projects such as drone delivery, which was one of Bezos’ pet projects. Other projects have been completely stopped such as Amazon’s Scout delivery robot, a virtual tours service, Care telehealth program, and a video-calling device for kids. Amazon’s 4-star, Pop Up, Books stores, Fresh supermarkets and Go cashier less convenience marts have also all been closed.

With the e-commerce boom from the pandemic, Amazon pushed to meet the demand of the masses. However, as online sales have slowed down, Amazon has been left with more facilities than it needs. Because of this, warehouses have been closed, had openings canceled or delayed. There have also been pauses on construction projects, because most of Amazon’s corporate workforce has been working remotely since the pandemic. In 2022’s fourth-quarter earning’s report, Amazon had a disappointing turnout with a small profit. Jeff Bezos probably did not predict something like this to happen. In a letter to employees, Bezos wrote, “Amazon couldn’t be better positioned for the future. We are firing on all cylinders, just as the world needs us to. We have things in the pipeline that will continue to astonish.”
