The definition of a millennial is someone that is born between 1981 and 1996 and more of this population is turning 40. Millennials travel more than other age groups according to the research company, Morning Consult. Lindsey Roeschke, a travel and hospitality analyst at the Morning Consult says that “18% of millennials have taken three or more domestic flights in the past year, compared to 10% of Gen Xers and 6% of baby boomers. They see travel as a right rather than a privilege, and consider their travel experiences to be a part of their identity rather than a check on a bucket list”. Millennials travel more, but do not spend more than other age groups.

According to InsureMyTrip, millennials spend about $4,141 per trip compared to gen xers who spend $5,060 and baby boomers who spend the most at $6,126. Millennials focus more on mental health and relaxation. The places that they go to are heavily influenced by social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. They are also more likely to stay in a home instead of a hotel. YouGov, a British market research firm found that almost 50% of Airbnb’s customers in 2022 were millennials. A reason for the increase in Airbnb rentals from millennials is that more of this age group is traveling with their children. Airbnb rentals have more bedrooms and some come with cribs, high chairs and toys. To cater to this, hotels are changing their interior décor, adding wellness services. Moxy and Aloft by Marriott even offers a free cocktail at check-in. Janu Tokyo has a 4,000 square-meter wellness center which is the biggest in Tokyo. The hotel and resort company, Shangri-La launched Hotel Jen, which focuses on the family, allows pets and has on-demand refrigerators that are cold enough to store breast milk.
