In the first quarter of 2023, there was a decrease in transported cargo from freight transport in Bulgaria by 5.1%, compared to the previous quarter. This is indicated by the preliminary data of the National Statistical Institute on transported cargo and passengers in the first quarter of 2023 by types of transport. Passengers carried by passenger transport (land, water and urban electric transport) increased by 3.7% compared to the previous quarter. Compared to the first quarter of 2022, transported cargo decreased by 14.9%.

Passengers carried by passenger transport (land, water and urban electric transport) increased by 24.1% in the first quarter of 2023. In the first quarter of 2023, the transported goods by land transport were 25,551,900 tons, or 16.1% less compared to the corresponding quarter of 2022. Domestic shipments decreased by 21.3%, and international - by 5.4%. Transported cargo from river and sea transport is 23.8% more compared to the same quarter of 2022 as a result of the greater amount of transported cargo from river transport. The number of passengers transported by land transport in the first quarter of 2023 was 94,582,500, or 18.9% more compared to the same period of the previous year.

The increase in railway transport was 21.8%, and in bus - by 18.8%. In the first quarter of 2023, water passenger transport saw an increase in both passengers carried by 9,700 passengers. During the period January - March 2023, the enterprises of the urban electric transport transported a total of 70,750,000 passengers, or by 31.7% more compared to the same period of 2022. Growth is observed in all types of urban electric transport, with the largest increase in electric bus transport (81.4%).

This could be the result of the economic processes throughout Europe, where a slow, but steady recession is on the cards. However, as a tourist destination, it is expected that the strong economic moment in Bulgaria will be in the third quarter.
