Russia’s fish production increased by 5.5% from January to May this year

According to the latest data from Rosstat, the production of fish products in January-May 2023 amounted to about 1.8 million tons, which is 5.5% higher than in 2022. The dynamics of production are ensured by a steadily growing catch: by May 31, Russian fishermen had caught almost 2.1 million tons of fish, which is 5.3% more than the figure for the same date last year. (by July 5, more than 2.5 million tons were already produced - 3% higher).
 
The growth in the production of fish products was also due to the production of frozen fish - 1.197 million tons (+11.4% compared to 2022), fish meat (including minced meat) ice cream - 47 thousand tons (+29% to the level of 2022 year), crustaceans, molluscs, frozen and cooked aquatic invertebrates - 54 thousand tons (+15% compared to 2022).
 
260,000 tons of cooked, canned and caviar fish, 113,000 tons of fish ice cream fillets, 73,000 tons of flour and granules from aquatic biological resources for non-food purposes (corresponding to the level of 2022) were produced.
 
Russian fishermen produce enough fish and seafood to saturate the domestic market. Export allows you to provide foreign exchange earnings and revenues to the budget of the Russian Federation. Export of fish products in January-May 2023 (excluding trade outside the customs area) increased by 3% and amounted to 914 thousand tons for $2.2 billion.
 
The main share in the export of fish products is occupied by: frozen fish - 77%, fish fillets (including minced meat) - 10%, fine and coarse grinding flour and granules from fish, crustaceans, mollusks, invertebrates, non-food - 7%, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic invertebrates - 5%.
 
Frozen fish was exported - 704 thousand tons worth more than $1 billion, fish fillets and other fish meat (including minced meat) - 92 thousand tons worth $362 million; fine and coarse flour and granules from fish, crustaceans, mollusks, invertebrates, non-food - 62 thousand tons for $ 94 million; crustaceans, mollusks, aquatic invertebrates - 43 thousand tons for $ 698 million.
 
The import of fish products in January-May 2023 amounted to about 245 thousand tons, which is 28% more than in 2022, in value terms - $ 1 billion. The main share in the import of fish products is occupied by: frozen fish - 49%, crustaceans, molluscs , aquatic invertebrates - 21%, prepared or canned fish, caviar - 11%, prepared or canned crustaceans and mollusks -6%, fish fillet (including minced meat) - 5%. Imported products are supplied to Russia from species of fish and other hydrobionts that are not harvested, not grown in Russia, or harvested and grown in insufficient quantities for the needs of the domestic market and the widest possible range.
