Montreal-based advanced vision startup Immervision has secured a $5.7 million contract from Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) to develop cutting-edge panoramic imaging systems. This contract is set to revolutionize the field of imaging technology and marks a significant milestone for Immervision, showcasing its industry-leading expertise in the creation of visionary solutions.

The contract, awarded by Public Services and Procurement Canada on behalf of DRDC’s Valcartier Research Centre, reflects a strategic collaboration aimed at the design and development of panoramic imaging components and systems with a horizontal field of view exceeding 80 degrees. This initiative demonstrates DRDC's commitment to advancing the capabilities of imaging technology for military and security applications.

Immervision, renowned for its pioneering work in the field, specializes in inventing, customizing, and licensing wide-angle lenses tailored to highly complex applications. These applications span from aerospace cameras and stratospheric balloons to commercial sectors like video surveillance, action cameras, automotive, Internet of Things (IoT), and mobile phones.

Pascale Nini, President and Chief Executive at Immervision, emphasized the company's role in offering comprehensive support for optical design, prototyping, testing, metrology, and image processing. Their dedication to panoramic optical technologies is poised to redefine the boundaries of situational awareness and operational effectiveness. DRDC, as Canada’s scientific, technological, and innovation leader in defense and security, plays a pivotal role in offering technical solutions and guidance to the Department of National Defence (DND), the Canadian Armed Forces, and various federal departments. Immervision’s previous collaborations with the United States Department of Defense and strategic partnerships with companies like Ceva underscore its global impact and influence.

In 2020, Immervision worked on the development of a wide-angle computer vision camera for small unmanned aerial systems, showcasing its dedication to pushing the boundaries of technology in military applications.

The partnership between Immervision and Ceva, a U.S.-based licenser of wireless connectivity and smart-sensing technologies, highlights the industry's recognition of Immervision's technological prowess. Ceva's $10 million USD investment secured exclusive licensing rights to Immervision’s advanced portfolio of wide-angle image-processing technology and software. This investment was a strategic move to dominate markets such as smartphones, surveillance, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and robotics.

Founded in 2000, Immervision has consistently developed advanced wide-angle optics, image processing, and sensor fusion technologies. Their Deep Seeing technology incorporates commercially ready patented technology breakthroughs, including wide-angle optics with panomorph vision, which augments resolution and viewing capabilities.

Immervision's latest achievement with the $5.7 million contract from DRDC signifies a significant step forward in the realm of panoramic imaging systems. Their unwavering commitment to innovation and expertise in the field is set to reshape the landscape of imaging technology, not only in the military sector but across a multitude of applications. As Immervision continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of vision systems, their impact on global industries is poised to be profound and far-reaching.
