The population began to buy video projectors for comfortable watching movies on the couch

Retailers have recorded a significant increase in demand for video projectors. In the M.video-Eldorado network, unit sales of video projectors for home cinema for the first eight months of 2023 increased 5-fold year-on-year, a company representative said. Wildberries and Citylink have similar sales dynamics. At Ozon, from January to August 2023, the sales growth of projectors in unit terms year–on-year amounted to 330%, at the Megamarket - 336%. None of the retailers disclosed the absolute figures.

In total, 64,700 projectors were purchased on the Russian market in the first half of 2023, which is 82% more than in the same period last year, according to statistics from the IT holding Fplus. In monetary terms, sales growth was 52% – up to $62.7 million. It is noteworthy that sales significantly exceeded not only the results of the crisis last year, but also in 2021, draws the attention of Fplus business analyst Artur Makhlayuk. Most likely, a multiple increase in a number of retailers occurred in certain categories of projectors – cheap, which account for about 40% of the Russian market in unit terms, he explains.

Most often, Russians choose products of Asian brands, the most popular projectors are from Chinese Wanbo, Taiwanese Acer and South Korean Samsung, a representative of Wildberries said. At M.video-Eldorado, Chinese Xgimi, Hisense, Nebula became the key demand. Demonstration installations from Acer, Cactus (Russia), Xgimi were in the greatest demand in Citylink. The top 3 projector brands by sales on Ozon included Wanbo, Umiio and TouYinger, followed by Xiaomi, Akenori, Ademy (all - China), etc. The devices from Xgimi, Xiaomi and their sub-brands were in the greatest demand among the users of the "Megamarket" this year. Vedomosti sent requests to projector manufacturers.

Representatives of Ozon and M.video-Eldorado stated that they did not observe the withdrawal of any brands from the market over the past year. On the contrary, new brands such as Wanbo (a sub-brand of Xiaomi), Umi, Nebula and Gimi have entered the platform, and Hisense has more choice.

With equal characteristics with other brands, the average check of Wanbo and Umiio is significantly lower than the competitors. Against the background of a large assortment, the average receipt for the first eight months of 2023 compared to the same period of 2022 for the entire category of goods decreased, the representative of Ozon points out. The average check for projectors at M.video-Eldorado has almost halved to 85,000 rubles. due to the interest of buyers in "more affordable solutions", the representative of M.video-Eldorado agrees. In Citylink, the average check in this category decreased slightly – by 10%, and at Ozon by 12%.

"Devices with a large projection on walls, screens or other surfaces are versatile and actively in demand amid the increasing popularity of home entertainment. This is watching movies, TV series, gaming, and general video consumption is growing with the expansion of the choice of content. The devices are great for joint leisure with children, travel or work tasks at home," says Alexey Nikonov, head of the Cinema and Sound Department at M.Video–Eldorado.

At the same time, sales of TVs with a wide diagonal are growing. According to M.video-Eldorado, the increase in the share was demonstrated by TV models from 45 to 70 inches, which accounted for 30% of unit sales (the share increased by 3 percentage points compared to last year) in the entire market. In total, in January – August 2023, Russians purchased more than 5 million televisions. Larger diagonals are in demand for entertainment and are widely represented due to the growth of the assortment of leading Chinese manufacturers, brands from Russia and the CIS, the representative of the retailer said. At the same time, according to him, the choice in favor of South Korean LG and Samsung continues to remain,

The trend of the last five years has been an increase in the share of sales of televisions with a larger diagonal, the commercial director emphasizes Holodilnik.ru Alexey Pogudalov. The place of viewing and relaxing becomes larger, respectively, and the choice of the diagonal of the TV increases, he explains.

For the manufacturer, the production and logistics of televisions with a diagonal of more than 75 inches is quite time-consuming, and then projectors come to replace them, which, with modest dimensions, provide a screen size of 100 inches or more, the expert draws attention. The second factor in choosing a projector is the price of the product. For example, a laser projector with a diagonal of 120 inches is much cheaper than a TV with a smaller diagonal, Pogudalov points out.

Users are really increasingly eager to watch content on the big screen, primarily because Hollywood majors have left cinemas and Russians have switched to watching movie premieres at home, says Denis Kuskov, CEO of Telecom Daily. This trend is reflected in the statistics of purchases of projectors and widescreen televisions, he points out. For example, in country houses, you can organize a home cinema and enjoy family viewing. Indeed, Russians are increasingly equipping home cinemas – probably against the background of a reduction in the number of film premieres, a representative of Wildberries confirms.

The growth in sales of video projectors is due to the fact that there are devices in an affordable price segment that are not inferior in characteristics to modern televisions, the representative of Citylink notes. In the coming year, the demand for home video projectors will continue, analysts and retailers concluded.
