Japanese car maker Toyota, which has three plants in Europe, has announced that they plan to produce smaller electric vehicles with a range of up to 100 kilometers at about CZK 400,000 (about USD 17,630) in the Czech city of Kolin.

Kolin is famous for its industrial zone and is home to many foreign manufactures, and it is seen as a place where many innovations or productions come from. The city is also home to Toyota Motor Manufacturing, which aims at speeding up the production of smaller affordable electric cars in Europe.

"I can imagine that the prices of such focused electric cars could range from CZK 390,000 to CZK 420,000. Such a production would fit into the development of electromobility in Kolin," said Yoshihiro Nakata, CEO of the European division, adding that the company's management should make a decision in the coming months.

Toyota has three plants in Europe, selling 20,000 electric cars in Europe this year from January to October, which represents a one percent share. The automaker is now targeting a 20 percent share of electric cars in its total sales in Europe as early as 2026. Worldwide, it wants to sell 1.5 million electric cars in the same year, as Toyota plans to launch six new e-models. It is not yet clear in which plant they should be produced.

The Kolin-based carmaker produces roughly a thousand cars a day. Last year, after two weaker years, it increased production by roughly a quarter, producing over 202,000 cars of Yaris and Aygo models, some with a hybrid drive. Toyota employs over 3,500 people in Kolin in a three-shift operation.
