Why motorcycles became more expensive in Russia
Source:auto.mail.ru From:Taiwan Trade Center, Moscow Update Time:2024/04/30

The price increase ranged from 22 to 33 percent. Russians began to buy motorcycles more often, while prices for two-wheeled vehicles increased. Japanese models are the leaders among used bikes, and Chinese and Russian brands occupy the first lines in the segment of new motorcycles.

Bikes are in demand

From January to mid-March 2024, the demand for motorcycles increased by 16% compared to the same period last year. This is evidenced by the data of a study conducted by specialists of the Avito Auto platform on the eve of the start of the new motorcycle season. According to market analysis (the study is available to Izvestia), the average cost of a new two-wheeled vehicle has increased by 22% and amounts to 110 thousand rubles. Used motorcycles have risen in price more (+33%) — on average, buying a used bike in the market will cost 60 thousand rubles.

It is noteworthy that representatives of Japanese brands hold three places in the top five most popular motorcycle brands in the used equipment segment. In particular, Honda (the most popular brand) accounts for 19% of the ads placed on the Avito Auto site. In second place is the Chinese brand Alpha (15% of ads).

Yamaha and Suzuki followed with a score of 8 and 5.4%. The domestic Racer brand closes the top five with 4.4% of ads. Thus, these five companies account for more than half of all offers for the sale of motorcycles. The remaining part is represented by numerous brands (primarily from China, India and Southeast Asian countries), each of which occupies less than 1%. The most popular used motorcycles were the Honda Dio AF-27 and Dio AF-34, as well as various Yamaha models.

Chinese and Russian companies hold the leadership in the segment of new technology. Alpha takes the first place (17% of ads), with a small margin (14.5% share), followed by the Russian Vento brand with production at factories in China. Motoland and Regulmoto have the same scheme (7.4 and 5.1%, respectively), which are located on the third and fourth lines. Completing the top five is Moto Morini (originally Italian motorcycles, the production of which was later moved to China), which account for 4.9% of sales announcements.

“The growth in demand for used motorcycles at the beginning of this year demonstrates the growing interest in motorcycle culture. The increasingly noticeable growth in the popularity of Chinese brands among both cars and motorcycles is associated with the active entry of new manufacturers from China into the market," Ilya Zarembo, head of the "Motor Vehicles" category at Avito Auto, told Izvestia.

Where are the "Izhs" and "Urals"

According to the results of 2023, also analyzed by the marketplace, the list of the most popular motorcycles with mileage includes Russian motorcycles "Izh" and "Ural", which are not in the top five at the beginning of this year. Moreover, motorcycles "Izh Jupiter-5" and "Izh Planeta-5" became leaders among used motorcycles by the end of 2023. And the Ural models occupied the third and eighth lines of the rating. According to experts, these motorcycles have not gone away, it's just that ads for their sale most often appear closer to summer.

As a rule, these are copies of "not the first freshness", released back in Soviet times, the technical condition of which is far from ideal. Often, ads for their sale appear or are updated in spring and summer, when people get to suburban areas, where such equipment is usually stored. As a rule, the price of such rarities does not exceed 30-40 thousand rubles, but to restore them you will have to invest the same, if not a large amount, " Roman Sitnikov, a motorcycle expert, told Izvestia.

At the same time, such ads affect the average cost of motorcycles, showing "the average temperature in the hospital," he notes. According to the expert, periodically there are ads on the market for the sale of the same Soviet "Izhs", "Urals" and "Dneprov" in good condition. However, such copies, as a rule, cost at least 150-200 thousand rubles.

Ivan Vladimirov, the editor-in-chief of the specialized magazine Moto, holds a similar point of view. When analyzing the market, the marketplace takes into account all ads placed on the site, without taking into account the characteristics and condition of a particular proposed motorcycle, he notes. Because of this, the overall picture with prices may be somewhat blurred, the expert believes.

Two-wheeled China

The trend towards expansion of Chinese brands demonstrated in the automotive market is also characteristic of the new motorcycle market, Roman Sitnikov believes. Due to the peculiarities of certification of this equipment, the same model from China may have a vehicle passport (EPTS) and be allowed to operate on public roads, or it may be issued as a"sports equipment".  In this case, it is not subject to registration with the State Traffic Inspectorate, but it can also be driven only in closed territories, special routes, he notes. According to the motorcycle expert, this primarily concerns enduro class models: such bikes are much less common among road bikes.

As for motorcycles of Japanese, European and American brands, their share among new models on the market is small and has been noticeably decreasing over the past two years, he notes.

Brands such as BMW, Harley-Davidson, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, KTM, and others are still supplied to our market under the parallel import scheme. However, if before we were talking about thousands of such motorcycles, now their deliveries and sales amount to several hundred copies per year, Roman Sitnikov told Izvestia.
