Bulgaria witnessed a notable surge in tourist arrivals, with 937,527 visitors recorded from December 1, 2023, to January 31, 2024, marking a five percent increase over the same period the previous year, according to the Tourism Ministry. This growth underscores Bulgaria's growing appeal as a prime tourist destination in Europe.

The ministry's report, based on data from the Unified Tourist Information System (USTI), highlighted a significant uptick in visitors from various countries. Italian tourists led the international influx with an impressive jump of over 30 percent, showcasing Bulgaria's increasing popularity among Italian travelers. Additionally, the period saw a 15 percent rise in tourists from North Macedonia and a six percent increase from the United Kingdom, indicating a broadening base of international interest in Bulgaria's tourist offerings.

January 2024 alone saw a remarkable 30 percent increase in tourists from Türkiye compared to January 2023, alongside notable rises in visitors from North Macedonia (15 percent) and the UK (7.5 percent). These figures reflect Bulgaria's strategic efforts to attract a diverse international audience, leveraging its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and affordable travel options.

Bansko, Bulgaria's premier ski resort, emerged as the most-visited destination during this period, with 86,772 tourist registrations. This highlights the country's strength in winter sports tourism, offering world-class skiing and snowboarding experiences.

Urban destinations across Bulgaria also experienced significant growth in tourist numbers. Sofia, the capital city, saw a 13 percent increase in visitors, affirming its status as a cultural and historical hub. Rousse, located along the Danube River, recorded the highest growth at 19.1 percent, followed by Plovdiv with a 17.5 percent increase, and Veliko Turnovo at 16.4 percent. Other cities like Pleven, Varna, Bourgas, and Stara Zagora also saw substantial increases in tourist arrivals, indicating a nationwide trend of rising interest in Bulgaria's urban centers.

In a separate report, Bulgaria’s National Statistical Institute highlighted a 16 percent increase in visits by non-residents to the country in 2023 compared to 2022, further evidencing Bulgaria's appeal as a destination for international travelers seeking diverse experiences, from its scenic landscapes and rich history to its vibrant city life.
