In October 2023, Wisconsin was named as one of the thirty-one national technology and innovation hubs in the country and was awarded a $7.5 million grant. The money will go towards the strategic development of Wisconsin’s biohealth technology industry. The Tech Hub program is part of the CHIPS and Science Act that was passed in 2022 by the Biden administration to promote economic development and innovation by strengthening American supply chains through investments and increased manufacturing capabilities in key technology sectors. According to U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, the Biden administration wants to invest in an American agenda “rooted in policies that will empower the United States to out-innovate and out-compete the rest of the world. Our Tech Hubs Program is fundamental to that mission and will supercharge innovation across the nation by spurring cutting-edge technological investments and creating 21st century job opportunities in people’s backyards” (U.S. Economic Development Administration, 2024).

The Biohealth Tech Hub in Wisconsin was led by a consortium of approximately 15 private and public partners including the Bioforward Wisconsin, Wisconsin Economic Development Corp., the University of Wisconsin system, GE Healthcare, Rockwell Automation, Plexus, among others. The members selected to be part of the Tech Hub will focus their efforts on “personalized medicine, which combines genomic innovation, advanced imaging technologies, big data analytics, artificial intelligence computing, population health trends and bioscience breakthroughs, with treatments carefully tailored to a patient’s specific medical needs” (Smart, 2024). The hub overall will “Leverage its cluster of healthcare assets and track record of commercializing medical research, the Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub will facilitate manufacturing coordination and data sharing, expand lab space and computing capacity, advance genomic technology, and accelerate domestic biotech manufacturing” (U.S. Economic Development Administration, 2024).

This marks the first phase of the Tech Hubs. Designated Tech Hubs can also apply for the next phase of the program, which would entail more investments and grants, ranging from $50 - $70 million. As of now, the Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub was able to receive additional grants for strategic development which will go towards planning for strengthening the region’s manufacturing and commercializing capacity and capabilities. The Tech Hub will also lead to more high-paying jobs and economic growth in the state as well as the rest of the country.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation is hosting an event on June 21st, 2024 as an opportunity for companies to learn more about the biohealth industry, including insights on leading biohealth companies. Wisconsin’s biohealth industries are leaders in manufacturing known for their excellence and astounding breakthroughs.
