Microsoft announced that it will invest $3.3 billion to expand its AI and cloud infrastructure over the next 2 years by developing cutting edge, state-of-the-art data centers. The newest data center that Microsoft will develop is located in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. Furthermore, Microsoft also plans to partner with Gateway Technical College to build a Data Center Academy which will provide training and certifications to thousands of students in the Information Technology (IT) sector. Microsoft’s goal with the data center project and improved infrastructure is to help “enable companies in Wisconsin and across the country to develop, deploy and use the world’s most advanced cloud services and AI applications to grow, modernize and improve their products and enterprises” (Microsoft, 2024). Not only does Microsoft hope to aid businesses, but it hopes to provide members of the workforce with the skills and tools to succeed.

Microsoft shows its commitment to the community as a whole by investing in local educational and employment programs. Specifically, Microsoft will work with the Racine Unified School District (RUSD) to expand its Girls in STEM program to more schools in the district. Microsoft will also be supporting a Summer Youth Employment Program that will match young people with local businesses to receive training and develop new skills. These announcements in Wisconsin are part of a longer history between the cooperation between Microsoft and the state. Investment projects include those in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s connected Systems Institute, the Titletown Tech business development center, startup accelerator program, and TechSpark an economic program focused on job creation.

Going beyond the technology industry, Microsoft has also been investing in affordable, renewable energy through its partnership with National Grid Renewables to build a megawatt solar project in Wisconsin. Moreover, National Grid Renewables and Microsoft will jointly contribute $20 million in an agreement to support under-resourced communities impacted by pollution. In addition, Microsoft plans to use resources responsibly, such as using recycled water in a closed loop cooling system, which will save on its water usage for its data centers. This marks a huge step for Microsoft to develop its business in an eco-friendlier manner.
