American semiconductor manufacturer Onsemi will expand the plant in Rožnov pod Radhoštěmin the Vsetín region, where it produces chips in Czechia. Originally, it was considered whether to invest in a factory in Korea or in the USA, Czech media reported recently.
The Scottsdale-based company company announced the decision in a press release, noting that the value of the planned investment is two billion dollars and is negotiating with the Czech government on a package of investment incentives.
"Our brownfield investment would ensure the establishment of a Central European supply chain, allowing us to better meet our customers' rapidly growing demand for innovative technologies that improve the energy efficiency of their applications," said Onsemi President Hassane El-Khoury.
Close cooperation with the Czech government will strengthen the production of intelligent power semiconductors, which are necessary for the European Union to be able to significantly reduce its carbon emissions and reduce the overall negative impact on the environment.
The investment strengthens the position in the field of semiconductors and at the same time has the potential to contribute to the development of the automotive industry and help the country with its adaptation to the emerging era of electromobility.
After the incentives have been approved by the government, they still have to be confirmed by the European Commission. Onsemi assumes that after the expansion, its entire Rožnovsk plant would contribute more than CZK 6 billion (or USD 257 million) to the gross domestic product of the Czech Republic annually.
The new onsemi plant in Rožnov would produce intelligent power semiconductors that are used to improve the energy efficiency of electric cars, renewable energy sources or data centers with artificial intelligence. The production would follow on from the current operations in which silicon crystals and silicon chips are produced.
