In the first half of 2024, 1.1 million coffee machines were bought in Russia, which is a third (35%) more than in January – June 2023, according to statistics from M.Video-Eldorado provided to Vedomosti. The trend was confirmed by the distributor diHouse and the analytical center "Check  Index" of the company "Platform OFD" (operator of fiscal data).

In the first six months of 2024, retailers sold coffee machines worth 15.9 billion rubles, which is 44% more than in the same period last year, according to data from M.Video-Eldorado. The average price increased by about 10% relative to 2023 and amounted to about 40,000 rubles, according to statistics from the distributor diHouse. The price tag has indeed increased by more than 10%, the commercial director of Kholodilnik.ru Alexey Pogudalov confirmed. According to the company, if in June 2023 the average price of a coffee machine was 13,900 rubles, then in June 2024 it was already 15,400 rubles. The average check increased by 11% to 19,760 rubles, according to the calculations of the analysts of the "Check Index".

The top 5 brands in monetary and unit terms, according to M.Video-Eldorado, included Italian Delonghi, Romanian-Italian Philips, German Krups, French Thomson and Swiss Polaris. The sales leader is still Delonghi with a share of about 30%, said Savely Tarasenko, manager of the diHouse small household appliances business. Some Western brands have officially left the market, and, for example, the Italian manufacturer Gaggia, on the contrary, decided to return a few years later, but Chinese and domestic brands of coffee machines predominate, he points out.

According to M.Video-Eldorado, drip coffee makers were most often bought in the first half of 2024. They took 24% of the market in pieces and 4% in money. According to Olga Akulinina, head of the Small Household Appliances department at M.Video-Eldorado, the popularity of the devices is explained by the relatively low cost – from 2000 rubles. The market share of 23% in quantitative terms and 72% in monetary terms was occupied by automatic coffee machines with a built-in cappuccino machine or milk tank. Carob coffee machines accounted for 20% of the market in pieces and 14% in money, Akulinina said.

Capsule coffee machines took 14% in pieces and 8% in money. Such models are easy to use and maintain, relatively inexpensive, their average bill has reached almost 7000 rubles against 40,000 rubles for fully automatic devices, Akulinina pointed out. In addition, this type of coffee machine takes up a minimum of space, but requires capsules, the choice of which is expanding. In 2024, capsule coffee machines were really actively bought in the price category of 12,000-15,000 rubles, the representative of the "Check of Index" indicated.

The largest increase in the coffee machine category was shown by capsule coffee makers, which doubled in sales over the year, said Alexey Poletaev, head of the Small Household Appliances procurement group at Citylink. The most popular brands in the retail chain are DeLonghi, Polaris, Philips and the Russian Kitfort.

At Avito, DeLonghi coffee machines were most often purchased in the first half of 2024, their share amounted to 30% of the total number. Phillips took the second place (25% of all sales), Krups and Saeco took the third and fourth places. Bosch was in fifth place with a 7% sales share. At the same time, sales of Polaris coffee makers increased most noticeably during the study period – by 64% year-on-year, the representative of Avito pointed out.

Back in 2020, the Russian coffee machine market amounted to slightly more than 1.3 million devices in annual terms, and this year the figure may double to 2.6 million units, Pogudalov predicts. Over the past five years, the volume of the market for home-made coffee equipment has tripled in quantitative terms, Akulinina agrees. At the same time, the share of households with an automatic coffee machine is still small, Poletaev pointed out. "Russian consumers are just getting to know and master this category of goods. In addition, many who have drip, carob or capsule coffee makers at home then switch to automatic coffee machines, since they have a wider range of functionality," he says.

The main demand began to shift to automatic (grain) coffee machines and in the first six months of 2024, such devices accounted for 2/3 of the market, says Tarasenko from diHouse. At the same time, if you look at the dynamics of the categories, the share of fully automatic and capsule coffee machines is growing, and drip coffee machines are falling, Pogudalov draws attention.

The popularity of coffee in Russia is facilitated by the trend towards "coffee with you", the growing number of coffee shops within walking distance, as well as a variety of modern coffee menus, but the average cost of a cup of takeaway coffee has also increased. This led to a gradual increase in demand for coffee consumption at home, and consequently an increase in sales of coffee machines," Akulinina draws attention. Coffee prices on world markets cannot but affect prices in coffee shops, which is one of the factors that stimulate making a drink at home, confirms Pogudalov. "For many years, Russia has been a tea country in terms of consumption. Now we see a reversal of the trend," Pogudalov said.

The cost of a cup of coffee in Russia on average increased by about 15% in the first half of 2024 and amounted to about 190 rubles, estimated Mikhail Burmistrov, CEO of Infoline Analytics. But this is not the only reason for the growth in sales of coffee machines: the real incomes of the population are increasing, which makes it possible to buy those types of equipment that were previously used sparingly. "Housing prices and cars are growing very fast, and in this regard, Russians are not ready for serious spending. But growing incomes make it possible to eat better. The transition from brewing instant coffee to drinks from a coffee machine is precisely an attribute of improving the quality of nutrition," he believes.
