7-Eleven

According to German media Lebensmittel Zeitung, 7-Eleven -- the largest chain of convenience stores in the world -- is looking for franchise partners in Europe, and its target includes Poland.

The possible debut of the retail giant in Poland would create serious competition in the market dominated by Żabka. At the same time, it cannot be ruled out that 7-Eleven would be ready to take over Żabka from its current owner, i.e. the CVC Capital Partners fund, instead of starting from scratch and competing with the network present in virtually every corner of Poland.

Lebensmittel Zeitung reported that the subsidiary, Seven & I Holdings of Japan is looking for experienced franchise partners throughout Western Europe, primarily in Germany, but also in Poland, Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Switzerland, and Austria.

The 7-Eleven chain, originating from the United States and owned by the Japanese Seven & I Holdings, runs around 83,000 convenience stores around the world. Outside of the US, such facilities are particularly popular in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

In Europe, 7-Eleven is present in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. It previously tried its hand in the UK but left the market in 1997.

7-Eleven has long been mentioned as a potential buyer of the Polish Żabka chain. The American CVC fund may sell Żabka to an industrial investor, or a financial investor, or exit the investment through the stock exchange. It is difficult to predict which variant the current owner of Żabka will choose.

The first 7-Eleven store opened in 1927 in Dallas, Texas, USA. In 1991, 70 percent of the shares in the network were purchased by the Japanese, saving 7-Eleven from probable bankruptcy.
