O2, one of the Tier 1 telecom companies in the Czech Republic, has finally joined the rest of the league after T-Mobile and Vodafone, supporting the Rich Communication Service (RCS) protocol on its network.

In the Czech Republic there are around 10.7 million inhabitants, out of which around 10 million have a cell phone and are using internet services on their devices. Unlike SMS (Short Message Service), the RCS messages can contain more texts, multimedia and interactive elements. They are transmitted over the data layer of the network and are much closer to messenger messages.

Czech T-Mobile launched RCS messages the first and they were only used for communication between companies and customers. Similar to T-Mobile, O2 is offering RCS messages only for the use in the corporate sector, typically and mainly for marketing communication. It can be a one-way business message or back and forth communication as customer service. This business communication of the RCS protocol is sometimes referred to as Rich Business Messaging.

One message can thus include the offer and sale of goods or services, technical support, a simple satisfaction survey, or perhaps tracking a shipment or a chatbot. It is not necessary to install any special application on the customer's side, the RCS user receives the same native application as regular SMS and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service).

Globally, RCS messages are now used by more than one billion users, according to O2. The number is growing rapidly, but it is still far behind SMS messages. Classic text messages are used by 6 billion people worldwide, of which four billion use a third-party messenger, such as Viber, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.
