Mitsui High-tec (Canada) Inc., an auto parts manufacturer, is expanding its presence in Ontario's electric vehicle sector with a $102.3 million investment in its Brantford headquarters. The expansion includes the construction of a new 103,500-square-foot manufacturing facility, set to open in 2024. This development will create 104 jobs and make Mitsui the sole Canadian company producing motor core parts for electric and hybrid vehicles. The Province of Ontario is contributing $3.1 million to support the expansion through Invest Ontario.

“Mitsui High-Tec (Canada), Inc.’s investment to expand its Brantford-based facilities is a huge boost not only for the people of southwestern Ontario but for our province’s growing manufacturing and auto sectors. With great partners, we’re building an electric vehicle and battery supply chain and making Ontario an auto-manufacturing powerhouse once again.” — Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario

Yasushi Harada, President of Mitsui High-tec (Canada), expressed excitement about Ontario's supportive environment for hybrid and EV industries. The region's proximity to export markets, along with ample space for growth, influenced Mitsui's decision to expand in Brantford. The company looks forward to strengthening its relationship with the region and the province throughout this expansion.

Mitsui High-tec, headquartered in Japan and established in 1949, operates in Europe and Asia, with additional North American locations in San Jose and Chicago. Ontario's previous expansion in 2015 involved a 100,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Brantford, supplying motor cores to auto manufacturers across North America. In May, the company announced a second expansion, investing $25 million to increase production capacity to 120,000 units per month by January 2024.

Ontario has attracted significant investment from global automakers, parts suppliers, and EV battery manufacturers, amounting to over $25 billion in the past two-and-a-half years. The province's automotive sector directly employs approximately 97,000 workers, with hundreds of thousands of indirect jobs. It boasts a robust auto supply chain, including over 700 parts firms, 500 tools, die, and mold makers, and 300 connected and autonomous companies.
