The Ugandan Ministry of Water and the Environment is launching a call for tenders for the supply, installation and commissioning of 40 solar photovoltaic systems for water supply projects, in four lots. Interested companies have until 17 January 2024 to apply.

Uganda is to acquire new solar photovoltaic power stations to supply water supply systems in 40 localities. This is the objective of the Ugandan Ministry of Water and the Environment, which has just launched a call for tenders for the supply, installation and commissioning of 40 solar systems.

The Ugandan government intends to use this infrastructure to improve the energy efficiency of water installations, which will be able to continue operating even in the event of a power cut. The government also wants to extend access to electricity to households and communities using this clean energy.

Companies or independent power producers (IPPs) interested in the call for expressions of interest must apply by 17 January 2024 at the latest. The successful company will supply, install and commission 40 solar photovoltaic systems for water supply projects, in four lots. According to the Ugandan authorities, the first 10 solar systems will be installed in the towns of Kiwenda, Kikyusa, Bamunanika, Banda, Ssekanyonyi, Mayanga, Kayunga, Buyende-2, Kagulu and Kasambira.

The second series of 10 power stations will be built in Kyamukonda, Biiso, Ulepi, Inde, Kuru, Lefori, Ayiilo, Adilang, Pallabek- Kal and Olilim. The company selected in the tender will also supply and install 10 solar systems in Kasanje, Kyamulibwa, Kakyanga, Nabigasa- Lyabugumu, Ntungu, Isingiro TC, Rubaya, Kabura, Katuna, and Nyakashaka- Rubingo. The fourth and final batch of 10 solar systems will be installed in water supply systems in Kyanvuma, Kyere, Kamod, Mkongoro, Abim-I, Losilang-1, Karenga, Iriri, Alakas and Nakapiripirit.

The Government of the Republic of Uganda has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the Electricity Access Scale-Up Project (EASP) and intends to apply part of the proceeds toward payments under the Contract for Supply, Installation and Commissioning of 40 Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Energy Packages for Water Supply Schemes.
