India’s natural gas production in April 2024 reached an impressive 2,958 million standard cubic meters (MMSCM), marking a 7.8 per cent increase from the same period last year. This surge reflects the nation’s strategic efforts to enhance its domestic production capabilities within the energy sector, according to the latest report from the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas.
In parallel, India’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports rose to 2,650 MMSCM during April 2024, a 5.4 per cent increase year-over-year. This growth in imports highlights the country’s continued reliance on external sources to satisfy its escalating energy demands, despite the uptick in domestic production. The combined availability of natural gas in April 2024 totalled 5,087 MMSCM, representing a 7.1 per cent year-over-year growth. This increased supply has been instrumental in supporting various economic sectors, particularly as India intensifies its energy-dependent industrial activities. A detailed analysis of natural gas consumption for April 2024 reveals that the fertilizer industry remains the predominant consumer, utilising 28 per cent of the total supply. This sector’s heavy reliance on natural gas for producing urea and other fertilizers is vital for India’s agricultural productivity.
City Gas Distribution (CGD) systems accounted for 20 per cent of the consumption, reflecting the government’s initiatives to promote natural gas as a cleaner fuel alternative for domestic cooking and transportation. The power sector, consuming 16 per cent of the total, leverages natural gas for electricity generation, benefiting from its lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels like coal and oil. Refineries and the petrochemical industry were also significant consumers, accounting for 11 per cent and 2 per cent of total natural gas usage, respectively. These industries utilise natural gas as a crucial feedstock for producing a range of products, including gasoline, diesel, plastics, and synthetic fibres.
The PPAC report also underscored the robust methodologies employed in collecting and verifying data on gas production and importation, ensuring the accuracy and transparency of the information provided. “Our meticulous approach to data management underscores our commitment to delivering reliable and timely information to all stakeholders,” stated an official from PPAC. The report highlighted several strategic initiatives by the government aimed at further boosting domestic natural gas production. These include new exploration projects and enhanced recovery techniques at existing fields, which are expected to gradually reduce India’s dependence on imports and stabilise the supply for the expanding domestic market. As India continues its journey towards a diversified and sustainable energy portfolio, the significance of natural gas is set to grow. This will not only support the nation’s economic ambitions but also align with its environmental commitments on the global stage, paving the way for a greener and more resilient energy future.
